The mesmerising beauty of Antarctic Icebergs
Nothing could have prepared us for the variety of icebergs that we were to see off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsular. Each was a unique moment in time – some would last days, some months, some years and all were beautiful and impressive in their own right.
Several were the size and shape of department stores with smooth sides and sharp corners, while others were grooved and gnarled by water and wind, etched into majestic curves or twisted knots. A few were blinding white and others shimmered turquoise blue in the low sunlight. Lots were pulled fast by invisible currents yet others seemed suspended in calmer waters. Some were translucent as they melted, held captive briefly on remote beaches while others were solid and bobbed just off shore. All were mesmerising.
Here are some photographs that Dave and I took of icebergs around the Antarctic Peninsula.
